Why Financial Planning & Our Process

October 24, 2024

Financial planning is the process of creating a strategy that aligns your finances with your life goals. Whether you’re preparing for retirement, saving for a major life event, or simply trying to get your finances in order, having a solid financial plan can provide clarity, direction, and most importantly peace of mind.

Why Financial Planning is Essential

  1. Goal Clarity: Planning helps you define and prioritize your financial goals. Whether you want to retire early, buy a home, fund your children’s education, or travel the world. It is sometimes difficult to think about what specific goals you have, but this process is great in identifying what they truly are.
  2. Debt Management: Saving and investing is great, but there are other obligations like mortgages, credit card debt, student loans. So it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. A financial plan helps you assess your current debt situation and create a plan to pay it off while still saving for the future. Making sure that we are tackling this the way we should while not negatively impacting our future.
  3. Building Wealth: The cornerstone of our future is creating that plan to build wealth. We can’t have enough in a cash savings account to retire. We need a strategy to build wealth through both investing in saving. But what does that look like for you? We take a look at your income, your debts, and your potentially existing investments or possible investment strategies to determine your plan of most effectively building wealth.
  4. Preparing for the Unexpected: We know life is never a straight line with no surprises. The unexpected happens. And the best thing we can do is have a plan to tackle whatever that is whenever it is. Whether it is a job loss, health issues, or another emergency, we help create a plan to have peace of mind that if anything does pop up, you have it covered.
  5. Retirement Security: The goal everyone is working towards. Whether it is top of mind or not. It is hard to wrap your head around everything that retirement comes with. What will your lifestyle be? How much will you need to live that life and how do you ensure you have enough? What will your healthcare costs be? What is the plan for our inheritance? And many more questions. We create the plan to answer all of those questions and give you the peace of mind that retirement will be everything you want it to be.

Our Financial Planning Process

  1. Discovery & Goal Setting
The first step in the financial planning process is sitting down and getting to know each other. In addition to getting to know one another, we will get a picture of your current financial situation, including: income, expenses, and debts. This phase is all about the baby stepping into the process. And gathering the necessary information and defining your short-term and long-term goals is the first step.
  2. Building Your Financial Picture
Once we define your current situation and goals, next we start to build the foundation of the plan. This includes looking at your cash flow, evaluating your investment portfolio, assessing your risk tolerance, and reviewing your insurance and retirement plans. Are there any points of weakness? Or are there things that are great right now and we should keep the same? Building out the answers to these questions is essential.
  3. Creating the Plan
Based on the foundational building, we create a personalized financial plan for you. We address all of the questions you may have and tackle budgeting, debt repayment, savings strategies, investment recommendations, retirement planning, and insurance coverage. Most importantly, we outline what we need to do each step of the way, making it as easy and simple as possible.
  4. Implementing the Strategy
After we create your plan, if you like what you see and want to move forward, we start to put it into action. This can involve reallocating your investments, opening retirement or other investing accounts, or purchasing insurance. We will guide you through each step of the process to make sure you are comfortable and on track.
  5. Ongoing Monitoring & Adjustments
We know life can change fast. And with that our plan might have to change too. We review your plan regularly to account for changes in your personal circumstances or the economic environment. Adjustments may be needed to stay aligned with your goals, and we make sure we make those changes while staying on the same page.

Final Thoughts

Our main goal in our financial planning is to make sure we are always on the same page as one another and that the plan is simple and something you are comfortable with. You don’t sit down with us to make life more complicated, so our financial plan should not do that either. Having our goals clearly defined and having a plan to achieve them that you like makes all the difference.

And don’t worry about timing. It’s never too early—or too late—to create a plan that helps secure your future.
